    Visitation Ministries and Pastoral Care
    How Am I Doing?
    A Self-Reflection/Evaluation and Collegial Conversation
Over the years, personal expectations and congregational expectations of pastoral care regarding visitation ministries (hospital visits, homebound visits, home communion visits, crisis visits) have changed greatly…or have they?
What your congregational members expect of you may vary greatly according to their age; their family traditions; their race/ethnicity; their gender; their geographical location; etc. And what you were mentored, educated to expect of yourself as clergy may depend on similar life circumstances. Recently, Dr. Ben Bohren, retired pastor of 55 years and former Regional Minister of CCNC/N, surveyed a very diverse set of ten pastors from across our denomination. He asked each one 5 questions to help them self-reflect/evaluate their pastoral care practices. Their responses might surprise you! Your own responses to those five questions might surprise you! Dare you invite your congregation to reflect on those five questions-surprise! Let’s reflect and engage in surprising conversations.

CEU Workshop on Preaching - CCNCN
    October 2024

For both the beginning and seasoned preacher, an important question to ask is: what kind of a listener to sermons am I?

When I hear someone preach, what do I hope for as the preacher begins? Do I hope to learn something? Feel something? Do I hope to be educated or inspired? And how do the answers to these questions consciously or unconsciously inform my own sermon writing process? What kinds of questions can I ask of the biblical text that will help me explore its meaning and significance in our lives?

This 1 ½ hour workshop will be led by Rev. Dr. Mary Donovan Turner who is a retired Professor of Preaching from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. Her longtime interests are preaching from Old Testament narratives and encouraging people to find voice in the church, the pulpit, and in the wider community.
